Obie Ozobu graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996. She obtained her law degree from Western State University and was admitted to the California Bar in 2001. While in law school, Ms. Ozobu was recognized by Who's Who of American Law School Students. Throughout her legal education and career, Ms. Ozobu has focused her practice on criminal defense. As a law student and graduate she clerked for the Los Angeles County and Orange County Public Defenders' Offices focusing on appellate rights for wrongly convicted individuals. From 2002 until 2005, Ms. Ozobu worked as a Los Angeles County Deputy Public Defender where she defended hundreds of individuals charged with Driving Under the Influence. She has been very successful with and is primarily responsible for conducting DMV hearings.
Scott Karpf received his B.A. in English and Theater in 1994 from Emory University, his Master of Fine Arts in Script Development and Dramaturgy with Honors from Columbia University School of the Arts in 2003 and his J.D. in 2010 from Pepperdine University School of Law. While attending law school, Mr. Karpf clerked for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in a Central Trails Unit that handled serious felony cases.
Prior to joining the Law Offices of Myles L. Berman, Mr. Karpf was a prosecutor with the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office, handling a wide range of criminal cases from indecent exposure, narcotics crimes, theft crimes, assaults, and of course, given the proximity to wine and craft beer country, DUI cases. Mr. Karpf was also previously a Deputy City Attorney with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office handling and trying cases in courthouses around Los Angeles and Long Beach. Before that, he was an associate at a boutique law firm specializing in criminal defense, tort litigation and family law practice. Mr. Karpf has appeared in both state and federal court handling over 3,000 criminal cases including over 800 DUI cases.
Prior to law school, Mr. Karpf spent over ten years as an entertainment executive in feature film development and digital distribution. Mr. Karpf is an active member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Beverly Hills Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
William J. Duffy
William J. Duffy graduated from the University of Montana in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He graduated from Western State University, College of Law. Mr. Duffy has been defending DUI cases in California since being admitted to the State Bar of California in 2007. While attending law school, he worked for the Los Angeles County District Attorney at the downtown Los Angeles Criminal Courts Building, assisting senior district attorneys in the prosecution of serious criminal cases that led to Grand Jury indictments and felony jury trials. Prior to going into private practice in 2008, Mr. Duffy worked for the San Bernardino County Public Defender as a deputy public defender, where he achieved not guilty verdicts in 9 of his 12 DUI and criminal jury trials performed there. Prior to joining the Law Offices of Myles L. Berman, Mr. Duffy's practice has focused specifically on California Vehicle Code and DUI Defense where he defended more than 2,000 DUI and DMV Administrative per Se hearings and as well as over 1,000 criminal matters across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. Mr. Duffy is the managing attorney of our Orange County office.
Paul Brar graduated with honors from the University of California, Irvine, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in political science in 1996. In 2003, Mr. Brar graduated from The University of Michigan Law School, where he was a quarterfinalist in the school's prestigious Campbell Moot Court competition. Admitted to the State Bar of California in 2006, Mr. Brar joined the Orange County District Attorney's Office in 2007 where he worked as a Deputy District Attorney for six years. During this time, Mr. Brar handled upward of 10,000 DUI cases at various stages of prosecution. This included filing charges; arraignments; case negotiations; preliminary hearings; motions and jury trials. Mr. Brar has completed 50 jury trials, with charges including violent felonies, drug sales and white collar crime. More than 30 of his jury trials were DUI cases, which also included allegations of prescription medication and street drug impairment. Mr. Brar has completed over 50 felony preliminary hearings, in cases ranging from felony DUI with great bodily injury enhancements to attempted murder. As a Deputy District Attorney, Mr. Brar completed a 16 month assignment at Orange County's Juvenile Justice Center, where he regularly handled juvenile DUI cases and court trials. In 2012, Mr. Brar was nominated by his supervisor at the Orange County District Attorney's Office for special recognition of his success in DUI trials. Mr. Brar is "Of Counsel" at the Law Offices of Myles L. Berman, where his work focuses on DUI defense case preparation and trials.
